How to Sell on Amazon Europe from the Nordics: A Practical Guide for 2026

Amazon is the largest online marketplace in Europe, and for many Nordic brands it is the fastest way to reach millions of new customers without building a separate web shop, logistics setup and marketing machine in every country. At the same time, Amazon Europe has its own rules, and brands that start without a plan often lose months on account issues, compliance questions and listings that never rank.

This guide walks through the key decisions a Nordic brand needs to make before launching on Amazon Europe.

Why Amazon Europe is worth it for Nordic brands

Home markets in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark are small. Amazon gives direct access to much larger markets such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Poland from a single seller account. Nordic products also have a strong reputation in categories like design, outdoor, sports, health, food, children's products and home goods.

The other advantage is speed. With Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA), Amazon stores your products, delivers them to customers and handles returns and customer service. You focus on the product, the listing and the advertising.

Step 1: Choose the right markets

Germany is usually the best first market. It is the largest Amazon marketplace in Europe and customers are used to buying international brands. From there, many brands add France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. Amazon.se is a natural option for Swedish and Finnish brands, but the volume is smaller than in Central Europe.

Before choosing, check three things: search demand for your product category, the level of competition and price points, and whether your packaging and labelling already work in the target language.

Step 2: Decide how you want to sell

There are two main ways to sell on Amazon:

Your own seller account

You open your own Amazon Seller Central account, register for VAT where needed and own the account, the data and the customer relationship on Amazon. This gives you full control and long-term value, but it takes time and requires ongoing management. Many brands work with an agency that manages the account for them. Selling through a Merchant of Record

In a Merchant of Record (MOR) model, a partner sells your products through its own Amazon account. The partner is the seller, handles VAT and compliance on that channel and pays you for the sales. This is often the fastest way to test Amazon Europe. See how our Merchant of Record model works.

Step 3: Plan logistics and FBA

Most successful sellers use FBA. You can start by sending inventory to one country and selling to other marketplaces through Amazon's European Fulfilment Network, or use Pan-European FBA, where Amazon distributes your stock across several countries. Pan-European FBA usually lowers fees and speeds up delivery, but storing goods in a country creates a VAT registration requirement there.

Plan your inbound shipments carefully: packaging, carton labels, barcodes (FNSKU) and prep requirements all need to be correct, or inventory can be delayed or rejected.

Step 4: Take care of VAT and compliance

This is where many Nordic brands get stuck. The most common requirements are:

  • VAT registrations in every country where your goods are stored, plus OSS reporting for cross-border sales.
  • Packaging EPR in Germany (LUCID registration and a dual system contract), and similar extended producer responsibility rules in France and other countries.
  • Electronics and batteries have their own registration requirements.
  • GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation), which requires an EU responsible person and product safety information on the listing.

We have collected the details in our Amazon Germany compliance checklist.

Step 5: Build listings that rank and convert

A good Amazon listing is written for both the algorithm and the customer. Start with keyword research in the local language, not a direct translation of your Finnish or Swedish texts. Use the main keywords in the title, bullet points and backend search terms, and invest in high quality images. With Brand Registry you also get A+ content, a Brand Store and better protection against hijackers. Read more about brand protection.

Step 6: Launch with advertising

New products rarely rank organically on day one. Amazon PPC (Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display) creates the first sales, which in turn improves organic ranking. A structured launch campaign with clear budgets and weekly optimisation is one of the biggest factors in a successful start. Read our guide to Amazon PPC for new product launches.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Launching in too many countries at once without local keyword research.
  • Underestimating compliance and VAT, which can lead to blocked listings or funds.
  • Sending inventory without checking prep and labelling requirements.
  • Stopping advertising too early, before the product has built ranking and reviews.

FAQ

Which Amazon marketplace should a Nordic brand start with?

For most brands Germany is the best first market because it is the largest Amazon marketplace in Europe. Amazon.se can be a good addition for Swedish and Finnish brands.

Do I need my own company in Germany to sell on Amazon.de?

No. A Nordic company can sell on Amazon.de, but it needs the right VAT and EPR registrations. Alternatively, you can sell through a Merchant of Record partner.

How long does it take to launch on Amazon Europe?

With your own account, account setup, registrations and the first shipment typically take from a few weeks to a few months. Through a Merchant of Record model, the launch can be much faster.

Can I sell on Amazon without using FBA?

Yes, you can ship orders yourself, but FBA gives you Prime eligibility and usually much better conversion, so most brands choose FBA.
